All of the stories listed below are stories of fiction, but most of them contain elements of truth. Factual information is presented in many of them and followed by a fictional story. Some contain humor, and others present good life lessons. The stories contain several types of selections including narrative, mixed, and paired selections. They are listed below in the order in which they appear in the book.

she came home only to discover that her doorknob was missing. The lesson of this
story is to try to be home when you are expecting someone. A Time to Relax - This story is about a teacher who rewarded her class
with a party, but not before making them believe it was something else. It
inspires good relations between teachers and their students. Annie’s Big Day - Annie’s Big Day is about a young deaf girl who
learned to dance ballet by learning to feel the sounds. The message is that
impairments should not get in the way of success. Ester’s Rainbow - The story of Ester’s rainbow is about a girl who
wakes up to see her first rainbow. This inspired her teacher to teach library
skills and science by having students research information about rainbows. My Favorite Sport - This is about a dad and his young son who he
introduced to the game of baseball by taking him to the park and playing a mind
game with him. Lost at the Zoo - Lost at the Zoo is a story that tells about a group
of students who went on a field trip to the zoo, featuring one student who got
lost by disobeying the rules. The moral of the story-follow the rules because
they are there for your protection. Vicki Learns a Lesson - is about a girl who didn’t study for a test,
and tried to get out of it by not telling the truth. The moral of the story is
that truth wins out over the long run more often than not. No Pity for Randolph - This story is about a lonely rat named Randolph
that couldn’t catch a break. Being what he was caused his demise. A Close Call - A Close Call is another animal story about an innocent
armadillo that dug holes in a man’s lawn looking for food, and almost lost his
life because of it. The message here is that one should not destroy other
people’s property. Crickets in the Closet - This story is about a lady who was cleaning
her house, and was surprised by hundreds of crickets living in her closet. Which Way is Right? - an informative article about palindromes-words
that are spelled the same from right to left as they are from left to right A Narrow Escape - is about twin raccoons that came close to being
devoured by an alligator, only to be saved by their father. The message is to
stay away from dangerous areas. A Midnight Adventure of Peter Opossum - is about a young opossum who
could not resist the temptation of taking a persimmon from Mr. Brown’s orchard,
only to learn that Mr. Brown had set a trap under the persimmon tree. Ice Skating-Real and Imagined - is a hypothetical story introduced by
supporting facts about two girls who lived in northern Europe around the 1200’s
or 1300’s. In the story they invented ice skates. My Pet Skunk - This is a story about a man who accidentally hit a
skunk that ran in front of his car. Having injured the skunk, the man took it
home and hoped to make a household pet of it. You figure out the ending. Nurse Gotcha - Nurse Gotcha is a story about a school nurse named
Michelle Ann Carlson who enjoyed the students in her school so much that she
occasionally played practical jokes on them. However, it was all in good fun and
had an interesting ending. Tina’s First Softball Game - This story is what it says it is, which
is a story about a girl who was encouraged to play on the school girls’softball
team for the first time. The Endless Tunnel - is a somewhat strange story about two teenage
boys who were driving through a tunnel looking for a town named Endless. The
word Endless is the key to the story. The Sock Box - Can you imagine being so disorganized that when you
finally decide to get organized, you choose to put your socks in a box? That is
what Rick did. See how he did it. Grandmother’s Attic - This story is about a little girl who visited
her grandmother one summer and became fascinated about the narrow stair case
that led to the attic. She was fascinated with some of the things she found in
the attic. No Fish Today - is a story about two boys named Scott and Ely. They
went fishing twice at the lake and didn’t catch any fish, but left both times
with a story to tell, especially the second time when they were frightened by
something scary. How Do I Get There? - This story is simply about a boy who was given a
surprise birthday party, and deals with following directions to his house, and
then other fun activities. A Strange Backpacking Trip - is an interesting and strange story about
a boy scout troop that went on a backpacking trip and had several scary
adventures. This one leaves you hanging. Superstitious Sam - Are you superstitious? Well, if so, you are very
much like the main character, Sam Simplemind. This boy is so superstitious that
bad things seem to happen to him all the time. He even uses good luck charms to
help him. But maybe if he works hard, he can change things without good luck
charms. Read the story and see. A Future Tyler Rose Queen - This story is about a little girl named
Cheryl who lived in the city of Tyler, Texas, whose greatest ambition was to
someday become the Rose Queen of the Tyler Rose Festival. Timid Tanner Twinkle - You are probably laughing as you read this
title. It is a silly name, but for Tanner Twinkle it was a difficult start in
life for a shy and timid boy, just trying to get attention by making people
laugh. Dog and Boy Stories - This is two different stories that are related.
One is about a boy and his dog, a common story, and the other is about a dog and
his boy, just the opposite of the first story. Could the second story be real?
You will just have to read it and find out. A Foiled Plot - is a story about two boys named Jerry and Justin who
plotted to play a dirty trick on their friend Kevin just to have some laughs at
his expense. However, in the end, it was Kevin who had the last laugh. Tanya’s Wish - is about a girl named Tanya who had a wish to become a
medical doctor just like her Aunt Anita when she grew up. This is a success
story that many have enjoyed. Laura’s Pet Pig - Are you kidding? A pet pig? Yes, that was Laura’s
desire, to have her pig live in the house with the rest of the family. Could
this have happened, and if so, could it have lasted? Read the story to find out. The Proud Punch Bowl - This is a somewhat strange story about a punch
bowl and utensils that could talk. If you don’t believe it could happen, read
the story for proof. Corinne Returns Home - Corinne went with her school band to
participate in the President’s inauguration in Washington, D.C., but strange
things happened on the way. It is possible that Corinne was not an earthling. Do
you think that is possible? Once again, you will have to read the story to find
out. The Talking Tree - This is a story in the same theme as The Proud
Punch Bowl, about an inanimate object that could talk. However, the tree
developed real human-like relations with a boy named Jesse, believe it or not! A Sure Winner - This story is about a girl who was reading her
favorite magazine one day and saw where she could enter a song writing contest.
Then she worked on some songs, mailed them in to the stated address, and waited
for her answer. She was sure she would be a winner. A Horrible Picnic - tells about Katie, Theresa, and some of their
friends who went on a picnic together at the local park. They ate their lunches,
and then played volleyball in the rain. Then when they started home they got
news that a python had escaped from the zoo. That is when the excitement
started. Susan’s Ferry Ride - is about a girl named Susan who experienced her
first ride on a ferry boat near Galveston, Texas, where she learned many things
about the animals of the Gulf of Mexico. Don’t Be Late and You’re Too Early - This is two different stories
that are related. One is about a girl named Emily who was to be the maid of
honor at her Aunt Janet’s wedding, and the other is about a boy named Michael
who was to be the best man at his brother Steven’s wedding. What is Magic? - What is Magic is a story about a boy named Mack who
was so inspired to be a magician that he performed a dangerous and costly trick
without truly understanding the circumstances of what he was doing. Just a Dream - A boy named Martin woke up one morning and found
himself roller-skating on a bright red floor. His imagination was vivid, but
some things that he believed were just a dream turned out to be real. My Hobby as a Philatelist - is about a boy named Cameron who talks
about his hobby of stamp collecting. My Hobby as a Numismatist - is about a girl named Judy who talks about
her hobby of coin collecting. A Mechanic’s Nightmare - tells about a man named Mr. Jackson, a
mechanic who experienced something he thought could not happen in his wildest
dreams. Was it a dream? You will have to read the story to find out. Where are You, Snooky? - This is s story about a family who went on a
vacation to Colorado, but lost their dog Snooky and had to come back home
without him. Where would Snooky finally end up? The Day Homer Broke His Nose - tells about a boy named Homer who had
such a good attitude that very little bothered him. Then things changed for the
worse for Homer. Did his attitude survive? A Sunny Day for Abel and Oh, No, Not Rain Again! - This is two
different stories that are related. One is about a boy named Abel who had a
great appreciation for sunny days because they always brightened up his day, and
the other is about a girl named Violet whose days always seemed to be rainy, but
she learned how to make the best of whatever the weather conditions were. Peter Opossum Discovers a Circus - is about a young opossum from an
earlier story, but this time he had wandered into an area where he woke up
surprised to see himself surrounded by a huge circus tent. While he was able to
see many things that were new and exciting to him, his goal was to get out of
there and get home safely. The Mystery of Ashley’s Blue Eraser - is about a girl named Ashley who
discovered after seeing a bug that the blue eraser on her pencil was missing.
Then she set out to find her eraser and believed that the bug may have played a
part in its disappearance. The ending was embarrassing for Ashley, but it could
have been worse. |
